500 Miles The Book By: Jim Gandolf

I thank the Lord for letting me grow up in the State of Indiana. On the west side of Indianapolis; around 34th and Georgetown Rd. This area was full of life one month a year. That month was the month of May. I lived two years in Port Washington, Wisconsin. I finished high school at Northwest High School in 1984. At that time at the speedway their was only one very powerful race per year. I know a few friends from Indianapolis, Indiana; would have played kick the can inside the race track with me. You could hear the winds blow with sounds that you would never hear anywhere else! I look forward to every month of May. Even though the night sounds of the speedway are very powerful to the chills that can shoot through your body. This 500 mile race is still even today the greatest race on earth. Why? History cures all fears of failure, family traditions that span time over the facts of each year drivers; and teams try to be the lucky one that can win here at that race track. Yes I do support some teams, and root for the underdog, but I always will cheer for AJ's team. LOL. I know that family and friends mean so much to the traditions at the speedway for now over 100 years. Thank you for the founders of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and the Tony Hulman Family for the careful thought of inspiration that over the years have given me the drive to sit down and write about this wonderful race.
